West Ham United U21s 0 Rovers U21s 1
Rovers' Under-21s ended their league campaign on a high with a fully deserved victory over West Ham United at Rush Green.
In a game in which Eric Kinder's young side were the better throughout, it was perhaps disappointing they only had Darragh Lenihan's 61st minute header to show for an impressive away performance.
Up against a much more experienced West Ham side, which included former England international Joe Cole, Bradley Bauress saw a first half header cleared off the line, whilst Hyuga Tanner was twice denied goals by impressive saves from Hammer's keeper Sam Howes.
David Raya also had to be alert at the other end, saving well to keep out Jordan Brown.
Rovers struck just past the hour mark when a Bradley Bauress free-kick was met by captain Darragh Lenihan and he powered the visitors in front with his second goal of the campaign.
The lead should have been doubled shortly afterwards, striker Jordan Preston slamming a superb effort against the bar, and as the rebound fell to the lively Luke Wall it looked like the young forward would put the ball into the net, but an outstanding save from the West Ham stopper saw him claw the ball away.
Ten minutes later and Rovers should have had it all wrapped up but Preston headed wide when well placed, whilst Jordan Laidler also spurned a brace of opportunities.
The home side pressed for an unlikely equaliser as the game entered the closing stages, but the Rovers defence saw the game out to claim a worthy three points.
"If the result had been 4-0 to us then it would have been a truer reflection of the game," said coach Eric Kinder afterwards.
"We were terrific, it was an absolutely outstanding display against some very good players.
"I'm delighted, we've got a group of players who are honest and want to go out and win the game and that is what they've done, it is a fantastic result to end our season."
