Rovers and Stoke City's Under-18s played out an entertaining 1-1 draw in the Brockhall sunshine this Tuesday lunchtime.
Both goals came in the first half as Stuart Callaway opened the scoring for Rovers, but the Potters levelled just before the break.
Both sides had chances to claim all three points in the second half, the draw just about the fair result.
It was the home side who fashioned the first chance of the game, a flowing fourth minute move almost lead to the opening goal but Stuart Callaway's effort was well saved.
The visitors responded well with Rovers grateful for a fantastic fingertip save from Andrew Fisher to tip a Stoke effort onto the crossbar and over.
The Rovers goalkeeper then made an amazing triple save to keep the lively Stoke frontman at bay, a tremendous spell of keeping from the 16-year-old.
Callaway opens the scoring for Rovers
Having withstood that pressure, it was Rovers who opened the scoring on 33 minutes. A spell of attacking play from the home side lead to Stuart Callaway shooting goalwards, the ball deflecting into the corner of the goal off a Stoke boot for his third goal in as many matches.
However the visitors soon hit back with a goal five minutes before the break. Play down the left saw the ball fired across the area where the much-thwarted Stoke striker finally got his goal with a close-range strike.
Stoke started the second half in the ascendency, forcing a series of corners, but Rovers held firm to eventually push the Potters back.
Callaway was denied his second of the afternoon when his near post shot was saved before Ramirez Howarth twice went close. Firing narrowly over, before his first-time strike flew across goal but narrowly wide.
Both sides worked hard to grab a winner but with chances at a premium in the closing stages a share of the spoils was inevitable.
"I was pleased with the players' application and the way they went about the game," said coach David Lowe.
"The lads worked tirelessly against a much older and more experienced Stoke City side."
Rovers have just one Academy league match to play, away at West Bromwich Albion on Saturday May 3rd.
