Ladies lose it late

28 April 2014

Rovers Ladies suffered last-gasp heartache as they lost 2-1 away to Bradford City.

Sarah Danby scored direct from a corner in the 94th minute to condemn Rovers to a second straight defeat, which leaves them at the foot of the Northern Division table.

Bradford started strongly and missed a couple of good chances before opening the scoring on the quarter-hour mark. A long ball out wide was then played through to the edge of the area, where the Bradford striker slotted home.

Rovers rallied after the restart and equalised on 51 minutes. Just seconds after coming off the bench, Hannah Forster’s driven free-kick into the goalmouth rebounded off the keeper and Sophie Flynn followed it in.

The goal gave Rovers renewed impetus, only to be thwarted by a couple of dubious decisions. A Bradford player was lucky to escape a red card for a raised boot, before the visitors had strong penalty appeals waved away.

Just as the game looked to be drifting towards a draw, Danby’s stoppage-time corner curled into the far top corner to secure the points for the hosts.

Interim manager Gemma Donnelly said: “Bradford were very direct, which seems to be the most effective method to secure points in this division.

“We would have taken a point towards the end, but their winning goal in added time epitomises our season. It was a cruel way to finish the game. Neither side deserved to win and a draw would have been a fairer result.

“We were lucky to only go in 1-0 down at the break, but I was proud of the reaction in the second half. We showed real fighting spirit. But we can’t and we shouldn’t take 45 minutes to get into a game and have to rely on clawing back goals in order to come out with something.”

ROVERS: Hutcheson, Barrett, Seed, S. Hardy, Bourne, Flynn (Flemming 85), O’Donnell (H. Forster 50), Walsh, Adams (Emery 60), Manning, N. Forster.
