Ladies earn Elland Road point

14 April 2014

Rovers Ladies picked up a useful point on their travels after drawing 1-1 away to Leeds.

Playing in front of almost 600 supporters at Elland Road, Leeds started the brighter of the two teams.

Jo Hutcheson pulled off a superb save to deny the Leeds striker early on, but she was powerless to prevent the hosts from opening the scoring on 12 minutes. Kelly Bourne was caught napping at the back and Carey Huegett got in behind to convert.

Hutcheson came to Rovers’ rescue again on 18 minutes as Leeds came close to doubling their lead, before Nichol Forster’s looping left-foot shot had to be tipped away just before the half-hour mark, as the visitors finally found a foothold in the game.

After a stern talking to at the break, Rovers pressed higher up the pitch in the second half and soon started to take control.

Vicky Westerman and Helen Seed both went close in quick succession, before Amanda Goodwin rattled the crossbar from a free-kick just past the hour mark.

With Rovers rampant, the equaliser eventually arrived 20 minutes from time. A free-kick into the box was flicked on by Steph Hardy, Lindsay Savage then played it into the path of Forster, who couldn’t miss from close range.

Rovers continued to create chances, but failed to capitalise. They had appeals for a penalty waved away when Goodwin’s shot appeared to strike an arm, Forster then fired over, before debutant Amie Barratt slotted just wide after being put through in the closing stages.

The point keeps Rovers above Leeds on goal difference and they still have three games in hand on the teams either side of them in the table.

ROVERS: Hutcheson, Fleming (Pennington 21), Seed, S. Hardy, Bourne, Emery (Manning 58), Savage, Goodwin, Westerman (Barratt 63), Walsh, N. Forster.
