Kane eyes England bow

5 September 2013

Rovers right-back Todd Kane will hope his recent club form will be rewarded with an England Under-21 debut against Moldova tonight.

The 19-year-old defender, who is on a season-long loan at Ewood Park from Chelsea, was an unused substitute when the Young Lions thrashed Scotland 6-0 in a friendly last month.

Kane has played a pivotal role in Rovers’ back-to-back home wins – scoring one and setting up two against Barnsley, before making a vital goal-line clearance and then claiming another assist against Bolton – and he will hope his impressive performances will merit a place in the starting line-up against Moldova (kick-off 7.45pm).

The UEFA European Under-21 Championship qualifier is Gareth Southgate’s first game in charge since taking over from Stuart Pearce.

The Moldova match is the first of a double-header for England, who travel to Tampere to take on Finland on Monday.
