Disappointment for Under-21 duo

10 September 2013

Anthony O'Connor picked up his second cap for the Republic of Ireland Under-21s, but it was one to forget as Germany ran out 4-0 winners in Sligo.

The Rovers defender played the full 90 minutes for Noel King's side, who found themselves 3-0 down at the break and then a man down midway through the second half.

Moritz Leitner opened the scoring on 12 minutes, before Kevin Volland bagged a quickfire brace. Samir Carruthers was sent off just past the hour mark, before Philipp Hofmann completed the scoring late on.

The defeat leaves Ireland third in Group 6 with three points from their opening two Euro 2015 qualifying fixtures.

In Group 1, Todd Kane was once again an unused substitute as England's Under-21s came from behind to draw 1-1 with Finland in Tampere.

Moshtagh Yaghoubi fired the hosts in front on the quarter-hour mark, before West Brom's Saido Berahino struck for the second successive game to rescue a point for England, who had captain Andre Wisdom sent off late on.

The Young Lions lie third in the standings with four points from their opening two group games.
