Danni at the double

1 November 2013

Danni Young scored twice as Rovers Ladies advanced to the last eight of the Lancashire FA Women’s Challenge Cup with a midweek win at home to Bolton Wanderers.

Young, who is Rovers’ only ever-present this season, fired the hosts into a half-time lead from the penalty spot, before booking a quarter-final tie away to Blackburn Community Sports Club with a smart finish 15 minutes from time.

Centre of Excellence graduates Chloe Adams and twins Rio and Steph Hardy were all handed their full debuts, while newly-appointed vice-captain Nichol Forster featured for the first time at centre-half – and excelled in her new position.

A closely-contested cup tie was played in driving rain at DACA, but it didn’t prevent Rovers from creating countless opportunities in the first half.

Hardy, Adams and Amy Bland, who played a prominent role on the right, causing Bolton problems with her pace, all worked the goalkeeper in the opening period, as Rovers strived to go in front.

They finally got their reward just before the break when Hardy was fouled in the box and Young scored from the spot.

The second half continued in a similar manner, with Rovers remaining on top. Hannah Forster and Sophie Flynn controlled the midfield and set up a couple of opportunities on the break, one of which was converted, when Young burst through and slotted the ball into the far corner.

Rovers restricted the visitors to just two shots on targets, whilst they continued to test the keeper and hit the side-netting on a couple of occasions through Hardy and Young.

Manager John Prince said: “I’m really pleased with how we adjusted to the physical and competitive nature of the game.

“We showed a lot of character to match Bolton’s work rate and eventually our quality shone through.

“It’s very exciting to see four Under-17s in the team and combined with the senior players, they are starting to give us a really nice blend.

“We look forward to playing Blackburn Community Sports Club in the next round on November 17th.”
