Country calls

20 March 2013

A busy week of international matches sees ten Rovers players away on duty.

There's a combination of World Cup qualifiers and international friendlies with plenty of involvement for those of a blue and white persuasion.

Jordan Rhodes and Grant Hanley are both with the Scotland squad for their two matches. They kick off this Friday at Hampden Park with a World Cup qualifier against Wales. They travel to Serbia the following Tuesday for another crunch match.

Scotland have just two points from their first four group matches and if they are to harbour any ambitions of a place in Brazil in 2014 then six points is a must.

Joshua King is with the Norwegian squad for their qualifier against Albania on March 22nd.

The winger missed Sunday's derby clash with Burnley but has joined up with his national squad for their Group E match in Oslo.

Norway currently lie three points behind leaders Switzerland at the top of their qualifying table.

Martin Olsson was initially called up for Sweden but has since pulled out through injury.

Tim Payne's New Zealand are also in World Cup qualifying action. This Friday they face New Caledonia in Dunedin before a trip to face the Solomon Islands next Tuesday.

The All Whites have a 100% record in the competition so far with four wins from four, and will be looking to maintain that over the next seven days.

Rovers have a healthy contingent of players at Under-21 and Under-19 level called up.

Jason Lowe is with the Stuart Pearce's England squad for their friendly matches against Romania at Wycombe this Thursday and Austria at Brighton on Monday.

Fabio Nunes has linked up with the Portugal Under-21 squad for their friendly against Sweden in Viseu before a match against a Republic of Ireland side that should feature John O'Sullivan and Anthony O'Connor next Monday in Dublin.

England's Under-19s are also in action this week and once again they should include Rovers players in their ranks. Regular defender Jack O'Connell has been called up once more and there's a first inclusion for Reserve-team striker Anton Forrester following his impressive start for the Under-21s since arriving from Everton in January.

Noel Blake's England take on Turkey's Under-19s at the New Bucks Head Stadium, Telford on Thursday night.
