Academy defeat Magpies

19 March 2013

A quick-fire start saw Rovers' Under-18s defeat their Newcastle United counterparts 4-1 at Brockhall on Saturday.

Just seven minutes were on the clock when Rovers opened the scoring as a corner from Tom Brown found Sam Lavelle at the back post and the defender volleyed home in fine style for his first goal at that level.

Five minutes later and it was 2-0 to the home side. Good pressure from Rovers saw them work the ball down the left before it fell nicely for Modou Cham on the edge of the box and he lashed the ball home.

A third Rovers goal arrived on 14 minutes. Again it was good pressure as the ball was won in midfield, Tom Brown and Deniz Pero combining before threading it through for Cham to notch his second of the match.

It wasn't all one way traffic in the half as Newcastle United pressed for a way back, David Raya in the Rovers goal making a couple of important saves to ensure the scoreline was 3-0 at half time.

On 66 minutes the visitors did pull a goal back. Working the ball well through midfield, Rolando Aarons applying the finishing touch.

Eleven minutes from time the Under-18s restored their two-goal lead with a well-taken goal. As Callum Harris hit a corner to the near post, substitute Ian Vicars swept the ball into the far corner with a first-time shot.

Chances came and went in the closing stages with both sides looking to add to their goal tally but it was Rovers who claimed a worthy win.

"I was delighted for our young team and the way we went about the game," said Under-18s coach Terry McPhillips after the game.

"To be fair to Newcastle, David Raya has had a good game for us and has made some good saves too.

"Sam Lavelle took his goal really well and has done ever so well, Modou scored two in two minutes but just couldn't get a hat-trick, he was ever so unlucky."

ROVERS: Raya, Wassi, Lavelle, Scott, Doyle, Brown, Torres, Harris, Rittenberg (sub Vicars 65 mins), Cham, Pero (sub Preston 75 mins).

Subs not used: Joel.
