A special occasion

18 June 2013

Gary Bowyer is honoured that Blackburn Rovers are part of the Football League's anniversary celebrations.

As founder members, Rovers and Derby County will go head-to-head on the opening weekend of the 2013-14 Championship season, the Football League's 125th year.

Because of the special occasion, Rovers were one of only 12 clubs who were informed of their opening match in advance of the full fixture release on Wednesday morning at 9am.

"It’s a great privilege for us," said new boss Bowyer. "As a club, we’re proud of the fact that we’ve got so much history and that we’re a founder member of the Football League.

"To be involved in that celebration on the opening day of the season just adds to the excitement that little bit more.

"We’ll have a good following down at Derby – I know that for a fact. It is a great ground, which generates a good atmosphere, so it should be a really special occasion for everybody involved."

For the manager, the opening game has the added spice of it being against one of his former clubs. Bowyer joined Rovers from Derby County back in 2003, whilst he was team-mates with Rams boss Nigel Clough during their time together at Nottingham Forest.

"Obviously Derby is where I started my coaching career, so it will be a bit special for me, with it being my first game as manager full-time as well," Bowyer added.

"For it to be against someone like Nigel is great, because I’ve known him for a long time, with the family connection with my dad and his dad, and growing up and playing with Nigel at Forest as well, so it’s something that I’m excited about and looking forward to now. I can’t wait to get going."
