Manchester City U18s 2-1 Rovers U18s
Rovers' Under-18s were unfortunate to lose 2-1 away at Manchester City on Saturday.
The home side had the better of the first half, leading 2-0 at the break, but Rovers rallied in the second however they couldn't find that equaliser at the death.
The match at Platt Lane started with an almighty scramble in the Rovers area, eventually the danger was smothered as David Raya claimed the ball after the City players had several strikes at goal.
Rovers countered with an excellent chance on 20 minutes. Modou Cham heading wide when well placed in front of goal, a missed opportunity that Terry McPhillips' side would rue.
City's first came on 26 minutes when a foul from Bradley Bauress gave the home side a free-kick. The ball was whipped in and poor marking allowed Wato Kuate free invitation to head home.
Four minutes later and City grabbed their second, Rovers slow to close the ball down as a cross was tapped home by Joe Nuttall at the back post.
To their credit Rovers regrouped and should have pulled a goal back straight from the kick-off, Brice Wassi did well to get passed his man down the right but Modou Cham saw his shot blocked in the centre.
A goal for Rovers eventually arrived as they struck on 54 minutes, Tom Brown playing in Jordan Preston and as the City goalkeeper advanced the Rovers striker lobbed the ball into the back of the net.
Rovers continued to press and were unfortunate when Cham slammed a long-range shot against the crossbar, the ball bouncing down on the line and away.
Dean Rittenberg went close whilst Jordan Preston was also denied as Rovers pressed for a leveller which ultimately didn't come.
"We had lots of good play and lots of good moves," said Under-18s coach Terry McPhillips.
"All in all I thought we deserved at least a point. We were okay in the first half, but paid for our mistakes. The second half saw us up the ante and in the end we were unfortunate to come away with nothing."
