Preston at the double

6 August 2013

Rovers' Academy maintained their unbeaten pre-season programme but were pushed all the way by a lively Birmingham City side on Tuesday.

The Under-18s have impressed this summer with four wins and one draw, and they made it five wins after coming from behind to triumph 2-1 at Brockhall thanks to a second half brace from striker Jordan Preston.

It was the visitors who started the better of the two sides, eventually making their pressure tell when they opened the scoring on 38 minutes. Birmingham capitalising on a poor pass out of defence to eventually squeeze the ball home beyond Callum Williams in goal.

Rovers improved after the break, increasing the tempo of their play, and they got back on level terms on 78 minutes after a Jordan Preston shot was handled in the area.

Substitute Preston took the honours from the spot, making no mistake to make it 1-1.

Four minutes from time the turnaround was complete as Jack Doyle crossed from the left and Jordan Preston rose well in the box to head home his and Rovers' second of the game to clinch the win.

"It was a really good game and a very good test for us," said coach David Lowe.

"Birmingham were the better side in the first half but we improved after the break. It was a tough and competitive fixture."

ROVERS: Williams, Vicars, Scott (sub Doyle 60 mins), Butterwick, Langford, Pierce (sub Torres 68 mins), Tanner (sub Wassi 46 mins), Harris (sub Preston 46 mins), Rittenberg, Joel, Wall.
