It was a tale of missed opportunities for Rovers' Under-21s as they lost 1-0 to Northwich Victoria at Valley Road on Saturday.
Eric Kinder's young side dominated the game throughout, but a catalogue of spurned chances proved costly.
The home side got the only goal of the game 14 minutes from time when a swift counter-attack saw Josh Kenworthy fire Northwich in front.
Rovers still had time to get something out of the game but wastefulness in front of goal was to be their downfall.
"This has been the story of our pre-season," said Kinder. "We had enough chances to win three games but we just couldn't score.
"Our overall play was poor, we have got to retain the ball better and get back to basics, and of course take our chances.
"We are a young side, the Academy lads will come in and play and will have to grow up pretty quick.
"I thought the three lads who came up, Bradley Bauress has done well, Devarn Green has shown us he has some ability and David Raya in goal has been excellent.
"The rest need to sharpen up a little bit but that is what pre-season is for, we've a game this Tuesday at Curzon Ashton, then at Lancaster on Friday night before we start the league programme next Monday."
