Cairney can't wait

23 August 2013

Tom Cairney is looking forward to making his Ewood Park debut this Saturday against Barnsley.

The midfielder, who joined Rovers on a six-month loan deal from Hull City, missed out on a home bow against Nottingham Forest due to suspension, so is eager to make his mark in what he expects will be a tough game against a hardworking Barnsley side.

"I've played at Ewood before but obviously not in a Blackburn Rovers shirt so I am really looking forward to it," said Cairney. "It is a lovely ground and a nice pitch.

"I know from last season that Barnsley will be very hard working. We won't get much respite and we know what to expect.

"But I know that if we are on our game then we should have too much and come out with three points."

For Cairney it has been a whirlwind few weeks at Rovers. A substitute appearance in the draw at Derby County was followed up by an eventful first start away at Carlisle United in the Capital One Cup in which he scored Rovers' first, set up the second but then saw red for two bookings.

"Performance-wise on my full debut I was very happy," added the 22-year-old. "I think I did have a good game, scoring and getting an assist. But getting the red card put a big downer on it.

"I suppose that is football, it happens. I'm just looking forward to the season now.

"The sooner we get our first three points it will settle everyone. I think we'll hit our stride after that.

"We have got a lot of new players and some young players so it takes time to gel but when that does happen I can see us climbing up the league."
