Lads lose at Everton

24 September 2012

Everton u18s 3 - 1 Rovers u18s

Rovers Academy turned in another disappointing display at the weekend as they suffered a 3-1 loss away at Everton.

After last week's 3-0 defeat at Bolton, Rovers made it an unwanted double with the loss at Finch Farm.

Terry McPhillips' side got off to the worst possible start in conceding after just four minutes. Robbie Cotton was dispossessed in midfield and that allowed Everton to advance before Chris Long fired home past a hesitant David Raya.

Rovers improved after that slow start, but never really threatened the opposition back line as Everton controlled the game.

Unimpressed, McPhillips made a double change at the break as Robbie Cotton and Antonie Boland were substituted, but moments after the restart they found themselves two goals down when a cross from the left by Ibou Touray took a huge deflection and crept in at the near post.

A third goal for the home side arrived on 71 minutes, Long taking advantage of more defensive hesitancy to score his second of the game to put the game beyond Rovers.

The closing stages saw Rovers play their best football of the game, the Everton goalkeeper twice called upon to make important saves whilst Curtis Haley had strong claims for a penalty saved away when he was upended in the box.

The final act of the match saw Rovers grab a consolation with persistance paying off before Bradley Mason rounded the goalkeeper to score.

"Everton were the better side but individual errors cost us," said McPhillips.

"There were some disappointing performances from Boland and Cotton who were replaced at half time.

"We did show a better fighting spirit than last week and our attitude was rewarded with a good goal at the end."

ROVERS: Raya, Anderson, Wassi, Thompson, Bauress, Brown, Cotton (sub Butterwick 46 mins), Boland (sub Mason 46 mins), Haley, Rittenberg, Laverty (sub Pero 70 mins).
