Reserves lose five-goal thriller

2 November 2012

Injury to Polish international overshadows match at Ewood Park.

An injury to goalkeeper Grzegorz Sandomierski overshadowed what turned out to be an entertaining Under-21 match at Ewood on Friday evening.

The Polish international had to be stretchered off the pitch after bravely claiming the ball ahead of Jamar Loza just past the hour mark, but inexplicably referee Peter Wright allowed play to continue for Loza to score into an unguarded net much to the surprise of all inside Ewood Park.

That goal from Loza was Norwich's second of the game after Reece Hall-Johnson had given the visitors the lead on 19 minutes, driving into the area from the right to drill the ball low into the opposite corner.

Play was delayed for ten minutes for treatment to Sandomierski and when play resumed it was quickly 3-0 as Hall-Johnson got the better of Hugo Fernandez to square for Loza to score his second of the game, the Norwich forward had scored all three when the two sides met back in August.

After a lacklustre showing in the first half the injustice of Norwich's second goal seemed to spur Rovers on and they quickly reduced arrears with two goals in the space of five minutes.

The first on 69 minutes was a superbly executed volley from John O'Sullivan, the Irishman connecting brilliantly from the edge of the box after Declan Rudd could only punch Tim Payne's centre away.

Payne would get in on the goalscoring act soon after as Fernandez found the Kiwi at the near post and he headed home.

Rovers laid siege to Norwich's goal in search of an equaliser, Curtis Haley having a trio of chances, the best of which came a minute into ten added at the end of the game, but he somehow fired wide Tim Payne's pass with the goal at his mercy.
