Rovers 1-2 Bolton Wanderers

Rovers suffered a second successive home defeat with a poor performance in a 2-1 loss to Bolton Wanderers.

Kevin Davies opened the scoring after just two minutes and that set the tone for the rest of the match as Wanderers controlled the game.

Paul Robinson saved well from Chris Eagles on three occasions in the first half, and although he saved his 60th minute free-kick, he was unable to stop Chung-Yong Lee following in to add a second.

Jordan Rhodes' tenth goal of the season with eight minutes remaining set up a frantic final few minutes, but it was too little too late for an off-colour Rovers.

Despite the defeat last time out Rovers boss Henning Berg made just the one change for the match against Bolton. After impressing as a substitute against Millwall at the weekend Joshua King has made the step up to the starting eleven for the first time, Markus Olsson dropping to the bench.

The visitors, in contrast, made six changes following their 1-1 draw at Brighton at the weekend.

Henning Berg had called for a reaction after Saturday's loss at Millwall, but the home side got the start they didn't ask for as from their very first attack, Bolton Wanderers took the lead.

There seemed little threat as Chris Eagles made his way across from the left to collect a pass but he slid in Kevin Davies and the former Rover did what he does so often at Ewood Park for Bolton and fired home past Paul Robinson at the near post.

That 2nd minute goal from the visitors set the tone for the remainder of the half, Rovers seeing plenty of the ball but it was Bolton who carried an attacking threat throughout.

Jay Spearing and Jacob Butterfield both saw efforts go wide of target, but it was Chris Eagles who was a constant threat down the left for Wanderers with a trio of efforts.

On 26 minutes he struck a fierce effort that Robinson couldn't hold with Dann clearing up, moments later the former Burnley man would shoot once more, Robinson again called upon to make the save.

The home side were neat and tidy in possession but against a well-drilled Bolton side threats on Adam Bogdan's goal were few and far between. Martin Olsson volleyed high into the stand from a Rochina free-kick, Danny Murphy did likewise when attempting to get onto the end of an Olsson centre.

Just past the half hour and the three former Rovers players on Bolton's books almost combined to give the visitors a second. Stephen Warnock's centre was mis-kicked by Keith Andrews in the area, the ball deflecting off Kevin Davies and thankfully wide.

The half ended with the Bolton still on top, Robinson couldn't hold another Eagles effort whilst Zat Knight saw his attempt deflect onto the roof of the net.

Bolton continued where they left off at the start of the second half although it took until the 58th minute before they threatened Paul Robinson's goal.

Neat approach play through the centre saw Jacob Butterfield strike goalwards, it needed a back pedalling Robinson to tip the ball over the bar.

From the resulting Eagles free kick Kevin Davies was picked out unmarked but thankfully he headed tamely wide, but that was just a brief let-off as Wanderers added a deserved second goal on the hour.

It came from a poor foul by Dickson Etuhu on Chris Eagles and from the resulting free-kick from Eagles, Robinson tipped the ball onto the post but it rebounded into the path of the onrushing Chung Yong Lee who poked home from six yards.

Immediately Henning Berg took off Etuhu with Jason Lowe on in his place, soon afterwards Morten Gamst Pedersen and Colin Kazim-Richards were introduced with Rochina and King making way as the Rovers boss looked for a response.

Such was the confidence from Bolton, and Eagles in particular, that the midfielder tried an audacious effort from inside his own half in an attempt to catch out Robinson, the effort was on target but the Rovers man was back in time to claim.

Despite those changes it was still the visitors threatening, Zat Knight denied from a Martin Petrov free-kick.

With eight minutes to go Rovers pulled a goal back as Jordan Rhodes bagged his tenth goal for the club, it was made by Colin Kazim-Richards who controlled Adam Henley's pass superbly before picking out Rhodes who headed beyond Bogdan.

That set up a frantic finale, Kazim-Richards saw a volley saved at the near post, then from a Mauro Formica cross Danny Murphy and Rhodes both failed to get that vital touch.

There was extra excitement when Paul Robinson came up for a last-gasp corner, but there was to be no last-gasp heroics.

Next up is the little matter of an encounter at Turf Moor, Rovers have to do better.
