Morten's Cardiff memories

6 December 2012

Rovers midfielder recalls his first meeting with Friday night's visitors.

For Morten Gamst Pedersen, matches against Cardiff City will always hold fond memories.

As the Norwegian points to the game against Friday night's opponents back in January 2005 as the turning point in his Blackburn Rovers career.

Signed by former manager Graeme Souness at the end of August 2004, the midfielder would have three different managers for his first three games at the club before having to wait on the sidelines to get any further opportunities.

"I made my debut under Souness against Manchester United," said the 30-year-old. "Then we played away at Newcastle United under Tony Parkes. Then Hughes came in and we had the first game against Portsmouth and I got tackled, got subbed and Matt Jansen came on and scored the winner.

"But after that I didn't play for three months, I was travelling with the team but I was never on the bench, I was just up in the stand, I just worked hard all the way.

"If I was on the bench I was lucky if I was told to warm up."

After being out of the first team squad for three months, it was somewhat of a surprise when Pedersen was named amongst the starters at Ninian Park, both to the fans who travelled that day, and to Pedersen himself.

"We travelled to Cardiff, we were playing them in the FA Cup, I wasn't supposed to play but Brett Emerton got ill and Sparky called me on the coach on the way to the stadium and told me I was going to play.

"I scored a goal in that game that gave us the replay at home, I scored there as well and went onto score in four games in a row after that.

"I've been part of the first team since so it Cardiff will always be a turning point for me at Blackburn."
