Eager for an early goal

21 December 2012

Jordan Rhodes believes it is crucial that Rovers get the opening goal when they play Brighton this weekend.

Rovers go into the Ewood Park game looking for their first win in over a month, with the star striker knowing how important grabbing the first goal can be in tight games.

"It's getting that first goal and getting a lead," said the 22-year-old ahead of the Brighton game.

"The longer it goes on the more belief the opposition get that they can get in the game and maybe nick a goal on a counter-attack and establish themselves.

"That is what Blackpool did on Saturday, they got a goal against the run of play then in the second half had a solid, disciplined performance and we struggled to break them down at times.

"Teams are going to do that against us and it is up to us to concentrate, put in a good display, break down teams and try and get goals ourselves.

"We are just going to have to stay disciplined, stay patient and have the attitude that we are going into every game trying to do the best we can, give 100% and hopefully a positive result comes from there."

Saturday's match against Gus Poyet's side marks the first of 4 games in 11 days during the league's busy festive period.

A win against Brighton could provide a much-needed boost to Rovers' form at a crucial stage to the season.

"The games come thick and fast so there is a good chance to turn it around," added Rhodes.

"Starting on Saturday against a tough Brighton side who will come here and be hard to beat. So it is up to us to be on our best game and be 100% out of the blocks to try and get the result.

"There are a lot of points on offer in a short space of time, so it is up to us to be on our toes and at our best to go out to try and do as well as we can.

"We'll take a couple of scruffy performances, but also staying solid, having good shape and being disciplined. It'd be nice to get a roll of the ball and get a few wins that way."
