A strong Rovers outfit overcame a hardworking Chorley side at Victory Park on Wednesday evening.
With several first-team players needing match practice, Rovers' line-up featured plenty of senior players as they defeated Chorley 3-2 in an entertaining encounter.
Garry Flitcroft's side started the brighter in the evening sunshine, Grant Hanley having to clear away from inside his own six yard box after Jake Kean's mis-control. Then Kieran Kilheeney fired over when well placed.
The home fans were rewarded when Chorley took the lead on 20 minutes. A cross from defender Simon Garner was met by Chris Denham and he hooked the ball home from close range.
Their lead only lasted six minutes however when Simon Vukcevic, who had earlier seen a goal ruled out for offside, threaded the ball through to David Goodwillie and he rounded the goalkeeper to score.
A minute later and it was Rovers in front with a quality goal from Morten Gamst Pedersen. As Chorley 'keeper Andy Robertson came out of his area to clear, the ball fell straight to the Norwegian just inside the opposition half and he clipped a delightful effort over the Magpies defence and into the empty net.
Rovers had further chances to extend their lead before the break, Goodwillie fired over from close-range whilst Ruben Rochina saw an effort well saved.
Seven minutes into the second half Rovers did get their third, neat play from Rochina saw the Spaniard thread the ball through to David Dunn and he fired across goal into the corner of the net.
That was the cue for both sides to make multiple changes, and as often is the case the game lost it's fluidity. However the home side rallied and soon it was 3-2, Jamie Vermiglio with a goal to remember, the midfielder blasting an effort leaving Jake Kean with no chance.
Matt Jansen was introduced with eight minutes to go much to the delight of both sets of fans - ironically he replaced Chorley defender Simon Garner - and the scene was set when Chorley were awarded a free-kick in front of goal four minutes from time, but whilst Jansen struck the ball fiercely, Kean pulled off an impressive fingertip save to deny.
Rovers are back in action this Sunday when they play their final pre-season match away at Cork City.
