Rovers 1 Hull City 0

Colin Kazim-Richards maintained his goalscoring start to the season with the only goal of the game as Rovers defeated Hull City 1-0 on Wednesday evening.

The on-loan striker opened his account at the weekend in the draw with Ipswich Town and followed that up by striking the decisive blow as Rovers picked up their first win of the campaign.

Rovers were made to work hard by a resilient Hull City side and with chances at a premium they were grateful of Kazim-Richards' strike 14 minutes from time.

For the first home game of the season Steve Kean made three changes from the side that had drawn away at Ipswich Town on the opening day.

Into the side came David Dunn and Markus Olsson along with summer signing Fabio Nunes for his debut. Nuno Gomes and Morten Gamst Pedersen both dropped to the bench whilst illness prevented Mauro Formica from being included.

Those changes saw Olsson come in at left back with Jason Lowe moving to the right flank, Fabio Nunes on the left with Dunn operating behind Kazim-Richards up front.

Knowing how important a bright start would be Rovers were quickly out of the blocks. Inside four minutes a lovely ball by David Dunn fed Jason Lowe down the right, he advanced before teeing up Colin Kazim-Richards but his first-time shot was swept narrowly wide.

Rovers continued to control the play, Dickson Etuhu and Danny Murphy in charge of the centre of midfield and it was from Murphy's ball that Markus Olsson was released down the left but whilst Kazim-Richards met the Swede's centre he couldn't guide his header on target.

That pattern of play continued but it wasn't until the 26th minute that a goalkeeper was called upon to make the save. It was Paul Robinson thrust into action as Corry Evans fed striker Nick Proschwitz but his left-footed strike was palmed over at the near post.

Markus Olsson skipped past Liam Rosenior with ease to shoot narrowly over whilst Tigers' captain Robert Koren saw his toe-poke comfortable stopped at the other end.

In comparison to the first the second half was slow to get going. Rovers threatened with a couple of early corners but Hull dealt with the pressure well.

A double change for Rovers wasn't long in coming, Nuno Gomes and Bruno Ribeiro coming on for Fabio Nunes and David Dunn. That saw Markus Olsson, who had seen some joy on the left, moved further forward as Bruno slotted in at left back, whilst Nuno Gomes was a straight swap for Dunn.

The former Portuguese international was quickly involved as he spread the ball wide to Olsson but Jason Lowe couldn't connect cleanly with his centre.

Then it was the other substitute's turn to impress as Bruno collected a pass from Dickson Etuhu on the left before cutting inside and shooting with his right foot but Ben Amos was down well to save at his near post.

With just under 15 minutes remaining Rovers finally struck the decisive blow. Man-of-the-match Dickson Etuhu sent the ball to the back post where Nuno Gomes saw his effort saved, Markus Olsson couldn't convert but Colin Kazim-Richards proved to be the predator once again by lashing home from six yards.

The relief around the ground was palpable as Rovers had been knocking on the door for so long, you wondered if it would ever come.

Three minutes into added time Hull were presented with a great chance to grab an unlikely equaliser when Dickson Etuhu was adjudged to have fouled Tom Cairney 20 yards out but thankfully Sone Aluko fired the free-kick high over the bar.

So it's a first three points of the season for Rovers, they now face Leicester City at Ewood on Saturday.
