Ladies win on opening day

21 August 2012

Wolves Ladies 0 Rovers Ladies 3

Rovers Ladies kicked off the new Northern Division season with a 3-0 win away to newly-promoted Wolves.

After an even opening, second-half strikes from Keeleigh Savage, Kim Turner and Lagan Makin secured the points for Scott Rogers’ side.

The game started slowly, with Rovers controlling possession, but without doing much with it. Wolves pressed and countered, but with little conviction.

The first real effort of the game fell to Katie Anderton, who failed to take advantage. Moments later, Hannah Forster tested the Wolves keeper, who managed to make the save and prevent the corner.

Rovers were becoming a little over confident in possession and a mistake at the back led to a Wolves chance, which wasn’t taken.

Savage then had the clearest chance of the half after Anderton played a clever ball through, but she smashed her shot straight at the keeper.

Rovers started brightly after the break, with a pacey passage of play between Turner, Savage and Anderton leading to Makin going through on goal, but she fired over.

It wasn't long before Rovers took the lead, as the ball was worked down the left and crossed for Savage to fire Rovers in front.

Play was suspended for about 10 minutes after a 50-50 challenge with Carmel Bennett led to an injury to the Wolves winger. Rovers resumed and maintained the high tempo, and added a second shortly after. Makin held the ball up, before sliding Turner in to score.

Wolves had a wild effort from distance that went high and wide, and a corner that came to nothing. In added time, a free-kick was fired over.

Rovers continued to press and added a third with the last kick of the game. The ball was worked across the pitch and Makin lashed it into the top corner to get Rovers’ promotion push well and truly underway.

Scott said: “This was always going to be a tricky game for us because Wolves were flying after promotion. I'm delighted with the win, as it’s important to get points on the board early on.

“This season our league has become much stronger and the first half was pretty much what we expected and proved that. I felt we didn’t do well enough with the ball going forward.

“We needed a little spark and Lagan Makin gave me that. She changed the game when she came on and was absolutely brilliant.

“In the second half, we saw glimpses of what my side can do. We now have to focus on Leicester next week, which will be another tough game.”

Rovers: Parker, Cox, Roberts, Bennett, Pennington, Farrell (Westerman 75), Tuner, H. Forster (Whitham 85), Anderton, N. Forster (Makin 46), Savage.
