Academy taste defeat

11 August 2012

Under 18s lose 2-1 away at Coventry City.

Rovers under 18s ended their pre-season preparations with an unfortunate loss away to Coventry City on Saturday.

Terry McPhillips' side certainly gave a good account of themselves, but slipped to a 2-1 defeat.

After a bright opening it was the home side who took a bizarre lead just past the midway point of the half. As Rovers goalkeeper David Raya played the ball out to Antonie Boland the midfielder felt under pressure to release the ball but inexplicably he played it back beyond Raya and into the back of his own net.

Rovers rallied from that setback forcing a series of chances, but it was Coventry who got the vital second goal on the stroke of half time with a long-range effort.

Early in the second half Rovers spurned a great chance to reduce arrears after Ryan Humphreys was brought down in the Coventry box, but captain Bradley Mason saw his penalty kick saved.

Unbowed Rovers continued to press, Brice Wassi unfortunate to see his fine shot cannon off the post.

With ten minutes to go striker Jordan Preston finally got the goal Rovers deserved and then there was late drama as Ryan Humphreys found the back of the net but it wasn't to be their day as it was deemed offside.

Coach McPhillips said: "It was a good game between two good sides and a good one for us to get under our belts at this stage of our preparations. I felt it was harsh for us to lose but we don't appear to have picked up any further injuries which is good.

"We now look forward to the start of our league season against Norwich next Saturday."
