Match Reports

PL2: Swansea 2 Rovers 1

20 September 2016

Rovers' Under-23s slipped to a narrow 2-1 loss away at Swansea City on Monday.

Damien Johnson's side went into the match at the Landore Training Centre in good heart off the back of two straight wins, but the PL2 league leaders came from behind to claim the points.

Rovers started brightly and took a deserved lead on 9 minutes. A free-kick into the area from Joe Grayson was met by Matty Platt at the back post and he side-footed home on the volley.

The visitors continued to control the game, with Andy Fisher in goal having little to do, but just before half-time the Swans drew level when a corner was played short and George Byers eventually forced the ball over the line from close-range.

Level at the break, it was Swansea who took the lead just five minutes into the second half when they were awarded a soft penalty kick.

As a corner from the left was swung in, goalscorer Platt was deemed to have pulled the shirt of his man with the referee pointing to the spot. Fisher dived the right way but Daniel James' spot-kick was too powerful.

Rovers responded well to going behind, putting the home side on the back foot for long periods, but although crosses from Jack Doyle caused consternation in the Swansea defence on several occasions no Rover was able to take advantage.

"In terms of our performance we were pleased with how we went about it," said Johnson.

"We limited them to very little and deserved at least a point but it wasn't to be."

ROVERS: Fisher, Travis, Doyle, Grayson, Magloire, Platt, Rankin-Costello, Tomlinson, Mansell, Hardcastle, Howarth (sub Pemberton 65 mins).

Subs not used: Ascroft, Askew, C. Doyle.
