Preview: Manchester City U23s (H)

A look ahead to tonight's Premier League 2 clash against the division's bottom side

22 November 2019

Rovers Under-23s return to action this evening when we host Manchester City Under-23s at Leyland in Premier League 2 Division 1.

Rovers will be hoping to get back on track following a frustrating defeat to Hertha Berlin in the Premier League International Cup last week at Ewood Park.

The team are searching for consistency having won two of their last five outings in all competitions, but Billy Barr could be bolstered by the return of some key players.

Lewis Thompson and Jack Vale both were in international action for Northern Ireland Under-21s and Wales Under-21s, respectively, and missed out on the game against Hertha a week ago.

Whilst Tom White is unavailable after going out on loan to Barrow, Brad Lyons is back in training and could play a part off the bench.

Joe Grayson remains a long-term absentee, but the tie could come too soon for Louie Annesley, who is on the comeback trail following a foot injury.

Harry Chapman, former City trainee Jacob Davenport and Dominic Samuel could all continue to get game time following a recent run in the side.

Second half goals from Dan Butterworth, Vale and Chapman earned the three points in the last meeting against City, with Rovers running out 3-1 winners at Ewood Park back in April, towards the end of last season.

This season has seen City endure a disappointing start to life this term, sitting bottom of the Premier League 2 Division 1 table with just one victory from their opening 10 games of the season.

City could include the highly-rated Tommy Doyle in their team, alongside fellow prospect Felix Nmecha.

Kick-off at the Lancashire FA HQ is at 7pm, with the game free of charge for Rovers season ticket holders, otherwise admission prices are £3 for adults and £1 for concessions.

Report: Rovers Under-23s 0-3 Manchester City Under-23s

Three second half strikes see Rovers comfortably beaten against City's Under-23s at Leyland

22 November 2019

A late Jayden Braaf brace helped Manchester City's Under-23s to a comfortable victory against a disappointing Rovers Under-23s at Leyland.

Braaf emerged off the bench to score a quickfire double in the last 10 minutes after Fisayo Dele-Bashiru had given the visitors the advantage midway through the second half.

Rovers struggled to create too many clear cut chances, and ultimately deserved to be on the wrong end of the result against Paul Harsley's outfit.

Both sides had opportunities early on, with Harry Chapman firing into the side netting for the hosts and Ian Povedo-Ocampo forcing Joe Hilton into a save down to his left inside the opening 10 minutes.

Soon after and visiting skipper Tommy Doyle sent a strike just wide of Hilton's right-hand post following an inventive free kick routine.

Midway through the half and Hilton was called into action again, this time saving with his legs to keep out Nabili Touazizi from inside the box.

With half time looming, Joe Rankin-Costello attempted to curl beyond City stopper Gavin Bazunu, but the Irishman was equal to the effort.

Chances were few and far between both before and after the interval, but it was City who broke the deadlock in impressive circumstances.

Dele-Bashiru controlled a hight ball from Rowan McDonald expertly, before volleying low, beyond Hilton and into the back of the net just before the hour mark.

The goal opened the game up, with Hilton staying big to deny Ian Povedo-Ocampo after the forward was played in by Doyle.

Rovers went in search of a route back into the encounter, but Bazunu was in the right position to deny Isaac Whitehall after the right back was found by Rankin-Costello.

But a moment later the lead was doubled through substitute Braaf.

Just four minutes after entering the action, the Dutchman cut onto his favoured right foot to smash a strike to the right of Hilton and into the bottom corner with 10 minutes remaining.

Braaf made the game safe soon after, capitalising on a mix up between Hilton and Lewis Thompson to slot into an empty net with only one minute remaining.
