Get your football fix tonight!

Come and watch the club's first ever Premier League International Cup game later tonight at Ewood Park!

15 November 2019

There may not be a game for the Rovers first team this weekend, but the Development Squad need your backing in their first ever Premier League International Cup encounter tonight.

Hertha Berlin's Under-23s side are the visitors to Ewood Park for the 7pm kick-off, as Rovers aim to get their Group C campaign off to the perfect start.

The German side suffered a narrow 2-1 defeat to Benfica in their first showdown in the competition, with Netherlands Under-21 international Daishawn Redan scoring a penalty for Hertha at AFC Fylde's Mill Farm.

Tony Mowbray confirmed earlier this month that he hopes Dominic Samuel and Ben Brereton will manage to get through 90 minutes during tonight's game.

“(Ben) Brereton and (Dominic) Samuel are two who we’ll try and get them 90 minutes against Hertha Berlin," said the Rovers boss.

“If they can get 90 minutes in that game then they are back in contention for the first team squad selection."

Having played for Northern Ireland's Under-21s side against Hungary last night, Lewis Thompson won't be available for Billy Barr this evening.

That means a shuffling of the pack, with Under-18s regular Dan Pike likeliest to come into the squad to fill Thompson's boots.

Further forward, Harry Chapman and Joe Rankin-Costello are both expected to be involved, whilst Jack Vale will be pushing for a start following a goal off the bench against Middlesbrough seven days ago.

The pair played in the last Development Squad outing against Middlesbrough's Under-23s last week, with the duo appearing for 60 minutes at Leyland in the Premier League Cup encounter.

There will be no advance sales for the encounter against the team from the German capital, with payment taken on the turnstiles, cash only.

The game is free to watch for Season Ticket holders, Junior Rovers members and 1875 Club members.

Otherwise, the match is priced at £3 for an Adult and £1 for a Concession.

Rovers follow tonight's game up with two further group stage encounters, which can be seen below:

  • Rovers v SL Benfica
    Lancashire FA County Ground, Leyland

    Kick-off 7pm

  • Newcastle United v Rovers

Report: Rovers Under-23s 0-2 Hertha Berlin Under-23s

Two second half strikes ensures Rovers' Premier League International Cup campaign gets off to a disappointing start

15 November 2019

Rovers' first ever Premier League International Cup campaign got off to a disappointing start against Hertha Berlin at Ewood Park.

Two goals in the final 12 minutes of the game made sure that Hertha returned to Germany with the three points, with the goals coming through Panzu Ernesto and a late tap in from substitute Timur Gayet.

Rovers huffed and puffed but it was to be a bitterly disappointing second half display, despite an encouraging first 45 minutes on home turf.

It was a first half of few chances at a chilly Ewood, with Jonas Dirkner coming closest to finding a breakthrough on the stroke of half time, with his effort deflecting just past Joe Hilton's post.

At the other end, Samuel's cross-shot flew just over Luis Klatte's upright before landing on the roof of the net.

The second half saw Hertha begin the better side, with Niko Bretschneider twice going close before the hour mark.

His second effort brought an excellent save from Hilton, who was in the right place at the right time to bravely beat away the left back's drive.

The visitors created a glorious opportunity to take the lead in the final 20 minutes, but Jessic Ngankam could only fire into the side-netting after skipping around Hilton.

But with the next chance came the first goal and it came in brilliant style.

Skipper Stefan Mols was robbed in midfield and the ball eventually fell to Ernesto, who ridled beyond Hilton and into the back of the net, leaving the Rovers stopper with no chance.

The second of the night wasn't far away and it was a slick counter attack that resulted in Hertha doubling their tally.

A quick move upfield left substitute Gayet with the simple finish, tapping home from close range to seal the win for the Germans in what was a professional display from the club from the capital.
