Three first half goals proved to be decisive for Tottenham Hotspur Under-23s as the visitors ran out comfortable winners at Leyland.
After going 2-0 down thanks to Shayon Harrison's early brace, a brilliant solo goal from Dan Butterworth looked to give Rovers hope of a comeback.
But a Paris Maghome strike on the stroke of half time was a hammer blow for Rovers, who struggled to create throughout a second half that resulted in no further goals for either side.
Johnson was boosted by the return of Hayden Carter from suspension after the defender missed the trip to Swansea City last time out following his sending off against Arsenal.
Under-18s pair George Wilson and Jalil Saadi provided options from the bench is needed.
Rovers couldn't have got off to a worse start, as a cross from the right was forced home at the back post by visiting striker Harrison to hand Tottenham an early advantage.
It was almost 2-0 soon after, but after a rampaging run by Jack Roles, Oliver Skipp dragged a shot wide when he really should have tested Rovers goalkeeper Andy Fisher.
Rovers were having plenty of the ball, but were struggling to get their shots away before Spurs went close again when Maghoma went for goal from the edge of the box which was beaten away by Fisher midway through the half.
But moments later the Londoners did get another goal and it was Harrison again, who this time got on the end of a cut back before smashing past Fisher from close range.
With 10 minutes of the half remaining Rovers almost pulled a goal back. A surging run from Butterworth saw him drive through the middle before releasing Stefan Mols down the left, but after a taking a touch, the winger could only fire over Tom Glover's upright.
But with four minutes to go until the break Rovers got themselves back in it as the impressive Butterworth weaved past a couple of opponents before firing past Glover and into the bottom corner.
It could and should have been 2-2 a moment later as firstly Brad Lyons prodded just wide before Glover produced an excellent stop to deny Mols from levelling things up.
But just as it looked like Rovers would finish the half the stronger, Roles picked out Maghome who slammed home in the final minute.
The third goal knocked the stuffing out of Rovers, but Butterworth nearly forced a quickfire response as he tested Glover, who had to save at his near post.
Skipper Joe Grayson fired over the bar before Maghoma went close just after the hour when he struck inches wide of the target.
Chances were few and far between from this point on, but the lively Roles curled just wide of the target with just one minute remaining.
It didn't matter though and in the end Spurs ran out comfortable winners at Leyland.
