Excellent display on the road earns victory for young Rovers against the Hammers in Dagenham

5 March 2019

Rovers moved a step closer to safety in Premier League 2 with an excellent victory away against West Ham United, at Dagenham & Redbridge's Chigwell Construction Stadium.

Up against a Hammers team who included first team duo Fabian Balbuena and Grady Diangana in the starting XI, goals from Charley Doyle, Joe Nuttall and Ben Brereton earned a crucial three points for Damien Johnson's outfit.

Rovers were boosted further with first team pair Jacob Davenport and Harry Chapman coming through the full game unscathed.

Rovers started well in Essex, and after Joseph Anang tipped an effort away for a corner, the resulting set piece was put into the box, with Doyle connecting well to bag the opener after only 20 minutes.

But just moments later and the Hammers responded in fine style through Dan Kemp.

The playmaker worked a yard on the edge of the box before seeing his right-footed effort deceive Charlie Albinson at the near post only three minutes after Doyle's opener.

Rovers came again, with Nuttall doing well before firing into the side netting in the final opportunity of what was a lively half.

West Ham were quickest out of the blocks in the second half, with Albinson doing well to deny Nathan Holland before the danger was cleared just before Jahmal Hector-Ingram could test the stopper again.

But with 13 minutes to go Rovers had a great chance to regain the lead when Nuttall was taken down in the box by Ben Johnson.

The striker, in fine form after two goals against Doncaster Rovers last week, calmly slotted home from the spot to hand the visitors control on the road with time running out.

The hosts went in search of a late equaliser, but Rovers remained strong and organised at the back, and managed to kill any Hammers hopes off with a brutal counter attack.

In the dying embers, a neat move eventually found Brereton, who cooly took the ball around Anang before knocking it into the net to complete a superb victory and performance for Johnson's troops.

Rovers are next in action on Monday 11th March, when Brighton & Hove Albion's Under-23s visit Leyland, kick-off 7pm.
