PL2 Report: Fulham 1 Rovers 0

Rovers lose late at the Cottage

16 August 2016

A stunning last-gasp goal from Fulham forward Dennis Adeniran condemned Rovers' Under-23 to a narrow opening day defeat.

Rovers were left to rue a host of missed chances as the hosts struck a sensational 88th minute winner to claim the points in their Premier League 2 opener.

A strong Fulham side, featuring three players who made their first team debuts last week,  had the better of the first half as Rovers struggled to get any momentum in the game, the visitors grateful to keeper Andy Fisher for keeping the Whites at bay.

But Damien Johnson's young side improved after the break with Willem Tomlinson, Lewis Mansell, Joe Rankin-Costello and Connor Thomson all spurning opportunties.

The game looked to be heading towards a draw when two minutes from time a cross from the right was met superbly on the volley by Adeniran 20-yards out, the ball flying into the top corner of the net to clinch the points in Fulham's favour.

"It was disappointing to lose it in the last minute," said Johnson. "It was some strike from the kid, a wonder goal.

"We were disappointing in the first half, but in the second we were outstanding. The only criticism would be our finishing.

"We had opportunities, you don't usually get that many when you go away from home, but it is the first game of the season and in terms of the level of performance the second half was exactly what we wanted.

"It is a tough lesson but that is football, if you don't take your chances, and we created plenty of them, you can always be punished and we were."
