Report: Rovers U18s 1-7 Liverpool U18s

Opening day defeat against the Reds for Billy Barr's side against the Reds at The Ac

12 August 2019

Rovers suffered an opening day defeat as Liverpool returned to Merseyside with the three points following the clash at our Academy.

After a hectic schedule that saw Rovers play four games in a week prior to the clash, along with kick-off against the Reds being less than 24 hours after returning from a camp in Madrid, it was always going to be a tough ask for Billy Barr's youngsters.

A number of first years played in the game, with Lenni Cirino, Jared Harlock and Zak Gilsenan all featuring against a Liverpool side who has former Rovers goalkeeper Ben Winterbottom inbetween the sticks.

Layton Stewart, James Balagizi and Tom Hill each bagged braces, before Jake Cain completed the big win for the visitors in tough conditions at Brockhall.

Rovers' goal came through Harlock midway through the second half, with match fatigue certainly playing a part in the defeat for Barr's boys.

The visitors took the lead early on through Stewart, who capitalised after Cain's header was spilled by Jordan Eastham.

Soon after and the lead was doubled through Hill, who was in the right place at the right time to nod home to make it 2-0.

Winterbottom was called into action just after the half hour mark, showing good reflexes to deny a former team-mate in Jalil Saadi, whose shot from distance was heading for the back of the net.

The second half began well for Rovers, with Harlock halving the deficit when he slid home a fine cross by Luke Brennan just seven minutes after the interval.

But that was as good as things got for the hosts, with Liverpool netting a quickfire double through Balagizi's two strikes in the space of just a few minutes.

Three goals in the final five minutes from Cain, Stewart and Hill completed the big win for Liverpool, but the scoreline was harsh on a Rovers side who had put in plenty of effort in the encounter.

Next up for Barr's charges is a trip to take on Sunderland at the Eppleton Colliery Welfare Ground on Saturday 17th August, kick-off 12.30pm.

Liverpool U18s: Winterbottom, Quansah (Wilson, 85), Norris, Savage, Koumetio, Clarkson, Hill, Cain, Stewart, Ritaccio (Corness, 85), Balagizi (Beck, 75).
