A hat-trick from home attacker Mason Greenwood ensured Rovers suffered a narrow defeat against Manchester United at the Aon Training Centre.
Greenwood bagged his first of the day early on, going one on one with Ben Winterbottom before seeing his strike kiss the post and nestle in the net just four minutes in.
It was 2-0 to the home side midway through the half and it came from that man Greenwood again, who picked the pocket of right back George Wilson before cooly chipping Winterbottom from 25 yards.
But just before the break Rovers pulled a goal back, as Jack Vale failed to beat Alex Fojticek once, but ensured the follow up beat the Slovenian goalkeeper and found the back of the net to give the visitors hope of a comeback.
That goal gave Rovers momentum and the score was evened up as Welshman Vale latched onto a deep corner kick to lash a volley back across goal and find the net to make it 2-2.
But a defensive error at the back led to Swedish forward Anthony Elanga making it 3-2 as pressure on the Rovers backline led to his nicking the ball in the box and tucking past Winterbottom.
United returned the favour with eight minutes remaining as a defensive howler of their own let in Sam Burns, who managed to squeeze a shot through the legs of Fojticek and in to equalise once more for Billy Barr's side.
With time running out, Rovers conceded a fourth as Greenwood weaved his way past a couple of challenges before firing past Winterbottom to win the game for his team with only three minutes remaining.
