Rovers produced an accomplished performance to comfortably beat West Ham United to get off to the perfect start to the Under-18 Premier League Cup on Saturday.

Three first half goals did the damage for Rovers, who will have also been pleased with a clean sheet against the Hammers.

Midfielder Luke Brennan handed the hosts the dream start to the encounter as he cut in before slotting in at the near post to give Rovers the lead just 18 minutes in.

Things got better for Billy Barr’s side as George Wilson scored a goal of the season contender; thrashing home from 30 yards to make it 2-0 just after the half hour mark.

Four minutes later and the win was sealed. Whilst Sam Burns’ strike wasn’t quite as good as Wilson’s, his outside of the boot strike from the edge of the box was special as he made the game safe nine minutes before the break.

It was a much-changed side and Barr will have been pleased with what he saw from his troops against a Hammers side who struggled to create anything of note.

The win puts Rovers top of Group E, level on points with Manchester City and above Leicester and West Ham, who sit bottom of the group.

Rovers’ attentions will return back to the bread and butter of the league as they head to Sunderland Under-18s on Saturday 6th October, kick-off 12.30 at the Academy of Light.

Rovers U18s: Eastham, Pike, Garrett (Connolly, 46), Wilson, Barnes (c), Saadi, Vale, Whitehall, Burns, Piliukaitis (Durrant, 70), Brennan (Connell, 80)

Unused substitutes: Winterbottom, Zimba.
