Rovers' Under-18s made it back-to-back wins with a narrow 1-0 victory over Middlesbrough on Saturday.

Following last week's away triumph over Stoke City, Billy Barr's youngsters followed that up with a close-run win at Brockhall.

A second half header from Daniel Butterworth proved to be the difference between the two sides, the forward's second of the campaign.

It was a slow opening with neither side threatening. After Ben Ascroft had saved a deflected shot from the visitors, Butterworth flashed an effort just past the far post in a first half light on goalmouth opportunities.

Play opened up in the second 45, Ascroft with an early save to keep out a close-range shot from Tyrone O'Neill.

Rovers responded well with Butterworth unfortunate to see a 55th minute goal ruled out for a foul on the keeper by the forward.

But after Lewis Thompson had seen his goalbound strike cleared off the line in a penalty box scramble, Rovers finally broke the deadlock on 70 minutes.

A corner on the left was sent to the near post by substitute Mason Fawns and Butterworth arrived first to clip the ball into the back of the net.

The game continued to be nip and tuck in the closing stages, but Rovers saw the game out to claim the points.

"Both sets of coaches will be disappointed with the way the teams failed to keep onto the ball," said Barr.

"We were better in the second half thank the first but still we can be a lot better.

"The back four were solid but our attacking flow wasn't as we would like.

"I'm pleased for the lads that they got the win but there is definitely stuff to work on during the week."

ROVERS: Ascroft, Jackson (sub Williams 61 mins), Thompson, Buckley (sub Wright 65 mins), C. Doyle, Magloire, Pemberton, Mols, Butterworth, Curran (sub Fawns 65 mins) Evans.

Subs not used: Campbell, Paton.
