Rovers u18s 3 Derby u18s 2

23 August 2016

Rovers' Under-18s overturned a two goal deficit to defeat Derby County 3-2 on Saturday.

The young Rovers trailed 2-0 at the break at Brockhall but three second half strikes gave the blue and whites their first victory of the season.

There was little to separate the two sides in a tight first half, with both teams having decent chances, but it was the Rams who stunned the Rovers with two goals just before the break.

On 42 minutes space opened up for Derby forward Adam Davie and he lashed home from 20-yards giving Ben Ascroft in the Rovers goal no chance.

It then got worse for the home side right on half-time when the visitors doubled their advantage. Ayomide Jibodu's cross from the right deflecting home off unfortunate defender Frank Jones and into the back of the net.

With plenty to do Rovers picked up the baton in the second half, going close when Callum Wright hit the post with a header.

But on 72 they deservedly pulled a goal back when early substitute Mason Fawns took advantage of a defensive error to fire home from inside the six-yard box.

With their tails up Billy Barr's side pushed for an equaliser and it duly arrived on 84 minutes when an in-swinging free-kick from Fawns was perfectly hit and the ball flew past the unsighted Derby keeper.

But the best was yet to come as Rovers completed their comeback with 90 minutes on the clock.

Again it was a free-kick, this time from the right as Ben Williams hit a sensational left-foot strike that flew over the wall and into the top corner of the goal to spark jubilant scenes.

"We had a bit of a go at them at half-time but having looked back at the video we weren't actually as bad as we thought, we just threw it away in the last five minutes," said Billy Barr.

"It rattled them a little bit and in the second half they went out and were very good.

"We got back in the game with Mason scoring his first and had other chances before his second goal.

"It was a deserved winner in the end, and what an unbelievable free-kick from Ben Williams. I don't recall him ever scoring in my time at the club.

"Fair play to him, that gives him a little boost now, so he's got to make sure he stays brave and gets people off those free-kicks if that is what he can do.

"It is good to get up and running."

The Under-18s are back in action this Saturday away at Newcastle United.
