More minutes for the players at Morecambe

Mowbray to utilise his squad once more

21 July 2017

Tony Mowbray will follow the same formula as previous pre-season outings when Rovers face Morecambe this Friday night.

The Rovers boss expects to play every available member of his first team squad for the game at the Globe Arena - kick-off 7.30pm.

Following tonight's match against the Shrimps, Mowbray will use next week's friendlies against Grimsby Town and Carlisle United to give his players more game time, but for now it is all about the group getting more minutes.

"It will be the same scenario as what we have done in the games before," said the manager.

"I think in next week's games we'll try to home in on a starting team. But I think we have to still give everybody minutes, we have to still utilise the young players whilst we try to fill out the squad a bit more with some experience.

"I think Friday everybody will get a game again, it is about getting the minutes, but next week we'll be looking to play some 90 minute games for more footballers as the season starts the following week."

Craig Conway will be assessed after missing Tuesday's 8-0 win over York City with a tight hamstring, whilst new signing Dominic Samuel isn't expected to feature having only joined on Wednesday.

Fans can pay on the door this evening at the Globe Arena, ticket prices are £10 Adults, £8 Concessions (65 and over), £6 18-23s and £3 for Under-18s.

Match Reports

Morecambe 1 Rovers 2

21 July 2017

Rovers were on the winning side once more this pre-season after a 2-1 victory over Morecambe.

In an excellent pre-season workout, all the goals came in the first half at the Globe Arena.

Danny Graham opened the scoring for Rovers after just ten minutes, showing quick reactions after Bradley Dack's effort had been kept out.

A fine second goal arrived on the half hour when Elliott Bennett rose highest at the back post to head home Ben Gladwin's centre.

However Morecambe pulled a goal back before the break in fine fashion when Rhys Turner fired home on the half-volley.

Whilst the second half saw no further goals, it wasn't for the want of trying. Turner grazed the crossbar for the hosts, whilst Dack went close on two further occasions.

In the closing stages trialist Joe Nuttall was denied when through on goal, Paul Caddis put a header just over, before the final chance of the match saw Bennett steer a shot just beyond the far post.

Rovers continue their summer preparations next Tuesday at Grimsby.

Tony Mowbray named a strong eleven for the trip to north Lancashire, with five of Rovers' six new arrivals named in the starting line-up. Only Dominic Samuel, who only signed on Wednesday, missing out.

After eight goals against York on Tuesday night it didn't take long for Rovers to find the target once more.

Just ten minutes in and Rovers were in front. Bradley Dack seeing his shot kept out but Graham was on hand to fire home the rebound.

A minute later last season's top scorer almost grabbed his second, but Morecambe's trialist keeper got down well to save.

Every pass was cheered by a noisy travelling Rovers' contingent as they kept the hosts at arms length, and their support was rewarded with a second goal just past the half hour.

Moving to the left to receive the ball Ben Gladwin ghosted inside before sending over a ball to the back post that Bennett rose to head home.

However Rovers weren't to have it all their own way as the Shrimps pulled a goal back on 38 minutes. A ball up to the edge of the box dropped invitingly to Turner and the Morecambe midfielder volleyed emphatically into the corner of the net.

Rovers almost restored their two-goal advantage before the break as Gladwin fired goalwards, but his effort was turned aside by the temporary Morecambe number one.

It was the hosts with the first chance of the second half as goalscorer Turner was a whisker away from getting them back on level terms. Again the Morecambe midfielder let fly from outside the box, the ball grazing the crossbar with Raya at full-stretch.

Rovers responded with an excellent effort of their own as a Derrick Williams cross was met on the volley by Dack, but the superbly struck effort only found the side-netting.

The long-range strikes continued as Alex Kenyon tried his luck from distance, the ball just clearing the bar, before Williams found Dack once more, but Morecambe's trialist keeper made another impressive save.

That was the cue for both sides to make changes, with Corry Evans, Liam Feeney, Jason Steele, Willem Tomlinson, Elliott Ward and Joe Nuttall introduced for the Blues.

Nuttall was immediately in the thick of the action with trio of chances in as many minutes.

First he brushed off his marker with ease to make space for a shot that flashed just wide. Then he met a centre from Williams with a looping header that went over the bar.

But his best chance came on 79 minutes when Evans sent him through on goal, but the keeper with no name again made an impressive save to keep out the young striker's effort.

Rovers continued to look for further goals in the closing stages. Paul Caddis planted a header narrowly over from Feeney's pin-point cross, before Bennett was narrowly wide after yet more good work from Feeney.

Five Rovers players got through 90 minutes in the match, more will be given the opportunity next Tuesday when they play Grimsby Town in their penultimate pre-season friendly.
