Report: Plymouth 2 Rovers 0

Two first half strikes end Rovers' unbeaten run in League One

A first half to forget led to Rovers suffering their first defeat in 19 league games as Plymouth ran out comfortable winners at a wet and windy Home Park

In truth, it was a lacklustre display from the visitors, who conceded two cheap first half goals, with Ruben Lameiras and Ryan Taylor doing the damage to make sure Rovers headed home empty handed.

The visitors were poor throughout and despite three changes early on in the second half, Rovers couldn't turn the tide in their favour.

Rovers boss Tony Mowbray makes one change for the long trip to tackle Plymouth Argyle at Home Park.

That change saw Craig Conway return to the side in place of Jack Payne, who dropped to the bench.

In form hitman Danny Graham - who had six goals in his last six league games - made his 500th career appearance.

Charlie Mulgrew remained sidelined, but could be back for next week's home clash with Oldham Athletic. Adam Armstrong started after an encouraging display against Walsall in midweek.

For the hosts, ex-Rover Yann Songo'o - who played twice for the blue-and-whites - began on the bench, whilst two of Mowbray's former players in Graham Carey, who he worked with at Celtic, and Lameiras, a player he signed for Coventry, both started.

An even start saw Rovers have the first opportunity of the game when Elliott Bennett narrowly sliced wide from the edge of the box after being set up by Bradley Dack just six minutes in.

Rovers were probing and Paul Downing was next to go for goal but after latching onto a looping Richie Smallwood free kick but saw his header held by Remi Matthews in the Plymouth goal.

Rovers were having the majority of the play, but on 25 minutes it was the hosts who took the lead when Lameiras came back to hurt Mowbray when he fired home from the edge of the box after the ball dropped kindly for the Portuguese creator.

Plymouth were clinical and 12 minutes later added to their tally. A smooth counter attack led to Carey's perfect low ball evading Downing and finding Taylor at the near post, who sweeped past Raya.

Rovers looked for a response and Armstrong saw his header saved comfortably by Matthews.

It was a half to forget for Rovers and Mowbray's response was to make a change at the interval with Dominic Samuel on in place of Graham.

Rovers did improve marginally after the break, with Samuel heading into the grateful gloves of Matthews 11 minutes into the second half.

After a double change, Downing was next to go close to finding Rovers a route back into the match but could only fire into the side-netting after Dack's deep corner fell his way.

Carey's whipped free kick saw Songo'o glance a header well wide just a moment after coming off the bench.

Rovers were attempting forays forward but struggled for any sort of creativity against a resolute Pilgrims backline.

But that was to be that at Rovers ran out losers in Devon.
