Akpan joined Rovers from fellow Championship side Reading in the summer of 2015, putting pen-to-paper on a two-year deal.

A product of Everton's youth system, Akpan made his debut for the Merseyside club in the Europa League in 2009, before spending time on loan at Hull City the following season.

In search of regular first team football, the six-footer joined Crawley Town in June 2011, playing a pivotal role as the Red Devils clinched promotion from League Two.

A strong start to the following season saw the dynamic midfielder earn a move to the Premier League, joining Reading on a three-and-a-half-year deal for an undisclosed fee.

A regular for the Royals for the past three years, Akpan also has honours on the international stage having represented Nigeria.

He made 37 appearances, scoring three goals, in his first season at Ewood Park.
