Reserves in stalemate with Bolton

Posted on: Thu 23 Feb 2012

Rovers Reserves played out a goalless draw with their Bolton counterparts in a game of few clear-cut chances at the LFA County Ground in Leyland.

Scotland striker David Goodwillie looked lively on a rare run out for the Reserves, forcing a smart stop from the keeper with a header in the first half and hitting the post from close range after the break.

Bolton's best chances fell to forward Tom Eaves, but he failed to test goalkeeper Jake Kean on several occasions.

The result, which was a fair reflection of the evening encounter, extends Rovers' unbeaten run to three games and keeps them above Bolton at the bottom of the Barclays Premier Reserve League North table.

On a soft playing surface, Bolton settled the better of the two teams and created the game's first opening on seven minutes. Rovers failed to clear their lines from a corner, the ball eventually broke to Eaves at the far post, but he side-footed it over the bar.

On 18 minutes, Josh Vela played the ball out left to Tope Obadeyi, who took on Anthony O'Connor and fired a crisp strike just past the post.

Rovers registered their first effort at goal just before the half-hour mark. Hugo Fernandez played a pin-point pass out wide to Nick Blackman, who took a touch before volleying just wide of the far post.

Bolton responded with a succession of corners, the second being deflected over the bar, before Jordan Slew shot straight at the keeper.

As the half drew to a close, O'Connor's cross was headed goalwards by Goodwillie, forcing a smart diving save from the keeper, whilst at the other end, Adam Blakeman delivered a dangerous corner from the right, but Eaves just couldn't connect at the back post.

Virtually straight from the restart, Eaves had an even better chance. After being played clean through, he cut back inside onto his right foot, but Myles Anderson just got back in time to make a covering tackle.

Ten minutes later, Rovers went even closer. Josh Morris' corner came off a Bolton defender, forcing goalkeeper Jay Lynch to make a superb reaction save. Goodwillie then struck the post on the follow-up and Matthew Pearson poked the rebound just wide.

Both sides rang the changes, with John O'Sullivan and Jamie Maclaren coming on for the visitors, and it was the young Aussie striker who came closest to finding a winner.

On 74 minutes, Maclaren chased down a lost cause, with Blackman picking up possession. He played the ball inside to James Knowles, who crossed for Maclaren, but his header found the side net.
