Reserves let lead slip

Posted on: Mon 06 Sep 2010

Rovers Reserves let a two-goal lead slip late on as they drew their opening league 3-3 against West Bromwich Albion.

Maceo Rigters had fired Rovers into a half-time lead before Chris Wood levelled just after the break.

But Rovers, featuring David Dunn and Jason Roberts in their ranks scored two quickfire goals courtesy of Josh Morris and Roberts to claim control of the game, until the final six minutes of the match.

Sam Mantom pulled one back for the visitors on 84 minutes before Wood claimed his second of the game after deflecting Adil Nabi's long range-effort over the line.

The new Reserve League season got underway under overcast skies at Leigh Sports Village on Bank Holiday Monday.

Rovers had the much stronger starting eleven with the likes of Jason Roberts, David Dunn, Junior Hoilett, Maceo Rigters and Amine Linganzi with first team experience, whilst the visitors did include New Zealand international Chris Wood amongst their starters.

Six minutes in Alan Judge crossed from the right with Hoilett arriving in from the left to head goalwards but Allsop in the Albion goal made a fine save. Jason Roberts unable to latch onto the loose ball on the follow-up.

Judge again was lively as he saw his shot blocked, Rigters was alert on the rebound but Allsop saved well at his near post.

A David Dunn centre saw Jason Roberts flash a header narrowly wide after good work from Josh Morris.

West Brom earlier had a goal ruled off for offside, their only other effort on the Rovers goal coming on 34 minutes when a long-range strike from Sam Mantom saw Jake Kean dive to his right to make the save, but that was a rare strike from the visitors as Rovers ended the half strongly, eventually getting their reward.

In the final five minutes of the half Maceo Rigters grazed the bar with a stinging drive from the angle, before strike partner Roberts curled a shot narrowly wide of the far post.

The final chance of the half saw Rovers take the lead. It was all down to the Dutchman Rigters as he ran from just inside the Albion half to hit a low left-footed shot that flew into the opposite corner of the goal.

The second half saw the visitors start much the stronger of the two sides and it came as no surprise when they levelled after eight minutes. Good work by forward Lateef Elford-Alliyu saw him get past Jake Kean at his near post and he squared the ball to Chris Wood for a simple tap-in.

Following on from his substitute appearance against Arsenal on Saturday, David Dunn played just over an hour for the second string, and his replacement Michael Potts had a hand in Rovers regaining the lead.

On 68 minutes it was Potts who found Amine Linganzi advancing and the Frenchman slipped in Josh Morris who beat Allsop with a near post shot.

With fifteen minutes to go Rovers looked to have wrapped the game up when after Rigters teasing play Junior Hoilett saw his shot slam against the post. Jason Roberts was quickest to the rebound to find the back of the net.

But leading 3-1 Rovers let their lead slip by conceding two goals in the last six minutes of the game.

Sloppy play saw Rovers fail to clear their lines and from the resulting pressure midfielder Sam Mantom steered the ball past Kean into the far corner.

Substitute Adil Nabi almost levelled for the visitors two minutes later when he saw a stinging shot strike the crossbar, but from their next attack Albion would get the goal their late pressure deserved.

A corner from the left came out to Nabi who hit the ball low and hard deflecting past Kean in the Rovers goal. Josh Morris cleared the ball away but the linesman on the far side ruled that it had crossed the line. New Zealand's World Cup representative Chris Wood claiming he got the last touch.

Rovers had been in control of the game for long spells, but to be caught late on will have no doubt disappointed manager Iain Brunskill.
