Rovers Reserves slipped to a narrow 1-0 defeat away at Hull City on Wednesday evening.
Up against a much more experienced side, the young Rovers had the better of the game but Daniel Cousin's 3rd minute goal proved to be winner on the night.
Hull's first attack of the game lead to the only goal, Gavin Gunning had done well to deflect a shot from Cairney wide, but from the resulting corner Cairney squared the ball to Cousin who scored from eight yards.
Nicky Featherstone went close to doubling the home side's lead on 7 minutes, but his lob over Frank Fielding landed on the roof of the net.
Phil Jones headed wide from an Andy Haworth free-kick, whilst at the other end Gavin Gunning cleared off the line after a shot from Ryan Kendall.
But whilst the first half was even in terms of chances, it was all Rovers in the second half as they looked for a way back into the game.
On 49 Haworth fed Maceo Rigters who shot from outside the area, but the 'keeper palmed the ball over. Then Aaron Doran tested the goalkeeper with a shot on the run but Oxley again made the save.
The visitor's best chance of the night came on 70 minutes when following a run down the right from Jason Lowe, his centre was met by Marcus Marshall, but from six yards out the substitute somehow headed wide.
The Academy's leading goalscorer Jason Banton was thrust into the action on 73 minutes and he almost had a hand in Rovers levelling. Good persistance from the 16-year-old saw him rob his man before feeding Doran, but the winger fired wide.
The final minutes saw Rovers continue to lay siege to the Hull City goal, Banton saw a shot parried, Rigters fired over whilst Marshall and Tom Hitchcock both saw efforts blocked.
It was a night where their endeavours didn't they rewards they deserved.
