Reserves taste defeat

Posted on: Thu 22 Oct 2009

Rovers Reserves were defeated 3-0 by Manchester United at Altrincham on Thursday evening.

In a match that was evenly contested, the home side took the lead on 18 minutes thanks to a well taken free-kick by Magnus Eikrem.

Chances came and went for either side until the final ten minutes when United added two further goals through Febian Brandy and Zoran Tosic for a scoreline that slightly flattered the league leaders.

Midfielder Gearoid Morrissey had the first chance of the night from an Andy Haworth free-kick, but the Irishman fired over. A minute later Michael Potts found Marcus Marshall on the left, his cross was fired goalwards first time by Julio Santa Cruz but Amos made the stop.

In an entertaining opening, the home side also went close when Gabriel Obertan found Matthew James, but he fired wide of the near post.

On 18 minutes the deadlock was broken. A tame free-kick was given to United and Norwegian Magnus Eikrem took the kick, lashing the ball past Jake Kean in the Rovers goal who had no chance.

Rovers looked to hit back when Michael Hall and Michael Potts combined but Marshall saw his first time effort saved, whilst at the other end a poor pass from Phil Jones saw Joshua King burst through but he put his effort wide of the target.

Rovers 'keeper Jake Kean then made a superb save to deny Sam Hewson, the young Rover diving full length to tip a low shot past the post as the home side ended the half strongly,

Scottish under 19 international Grant Hanley came on at the start of the second half, the 17-year-old making his first Reserve appearance of the season, replacing Phil Jones who could have some involvement for the seniors over the next few days.

The second half Gearoid Morrissey and Andy Haworth both saw efforts saved by Amos early on, whilst United captain Ritchie De Laet almost capped a fine run with a goal but his shot struck the outside of the post.

The second period was even, with both sides probing for goals, but it wasn't until the final ten minutes that United finally gained the upper hand.

On 82 minutes the lead was doubled when from a Tosic corner kick substitute Febian Brandy was allowed to head home in a crowded penalty area much to Reserve team boss Iain Brunskill's dismay.

He took the opportunity to bring on Academy duo Jason Banton and Tom Hitchcock, but unlike the previous outing where they combined to rescue a point for Rovers, neither were afforded the chance to make such an impact in this game.

It was at the other end where all the action was, Jake Kean pulled off a stupendous save on the stroke of ninety minutes to deny Cory Evans, but just a minute later he had no answer to a dipping swerving shot from Serbian international Zoran Tosic as the home side added a third.

The scoreline was harsh on the young Rovers side, United having just that extra quality where it mattered on the night.
