Biography:
After more than twelve months of trying, former Rovers boss Mark Hughes finally secured the services of Benni McCarthy from Porto on a four-year deal for an undisclosed fee in the summer of 2006.
McCarthy has a wealth of experience having played across Europe, starting his senior career with Ajax then he moved onto Celta Vigo in Spain, before a moved to Portugal followed.
The South African had a sensational first season with the Ewood Park club, grabbing 24 goals in all competitions to finish the second top goalscorer in England.
His match winning strike against Arsenal in the FA Cup was voted the fans 'goal of the year'.
April 2008 saw Benni sign a new three-year deal to take him to the summer of 2011.
