GARNER CAN'T SAVE ENGLAND

Posted on: Fri 06 May 2005

Garner has managed three goals for England in the tournament so far

TWO second half strikes from Rovers' starlet Joe Garner couldn't stop England's under 17s slipping to a 3-2 defeat to Turkey in the UEFA European under 17 Championships yesterday.

Trailing 2-0 at half-time thanks to a brace from Kose, Garner poked the ball home a minute after the restart, and on the hour mark headed England back on level terms.

But a stunning strike from Sahin put the Turks back in front, but despite England's best efforts, they couldn't find a third goal.

Elsewhere in Group A, Belarus, who England defeated 4-0 in the first match, defeated Italy, leaving all four clubs on three points after two points. England top the group by virtue of goal difference and still have an excellent chance of qualifying for the latter stages.

England play Italy on Sunday in their final group game knowing a win or draw should see them through to the semi finals.

In Group B, Switzerland drew 0-0 with Holland, whilst Croatia defeated Israel 4-2. This sees Switzerland top the group on goal difference from Croatia.
