DICKOV'S DAZZLER WINS DERBY

Mark Hughes - applauds
Hughes: We deserved the win

MARK Hughes can look forward to 2005 as Rovers ended 2004 with a valuable win over local rivals Bolton Wanderers.

Paul Dickov's stunning sixth minute strike was enough for Rovers to take all three points, leaving the Rovers boss highly delighted.

"We are obviously delighted, it was important we picked up three points today," said Hughes after the game.

"Time and time again I seem to say after games that we haven't had the rewards for the level of performance we put in, but today that wasn't the case.

"The performance level was fantastic, we had to withstand the physical battle today, and every one stood up to that and I thought we were first class.

"The two lads at the back in the centre bore the brunt of the physical side of it, but they were ably supported by the full backs and the lads in midfield.

"Because we had that defensive base we were able to build attacks ourselves, and overall if one team deserved to win it was in.

"We had a decent chance at the end of the game which would have made the result a little more emphatic.

"I felt we deserved more than one goal today, but I'm not going to be greedy, we won the game and I'm happy with the three points."
