ROVERS TRIAL FOR MARADONA

Posted on: Wed 17 Nov 2004

GRAEME Souness is planning to give a trial to Napoli youngster Diego Maradona Jnr, but only when the 17 year old is fully fit.

Maradona, son of the famous Argentinean midfielder who ripped England apart in the 1986 World Cup, was recommended to Souness by a contact in Italy, and the Rovers manager admitted it would be foolish not to take a look at him.

"We are always interested in signing new players," he said. "A friend of mine in Italy brought him to my attention so we have invited him over."
Maradona picked up a knock in training with his club side so the notion of putting him on trial at Rovers has been put on hold, with Souness hoping to get him over sometime later this week.

"This is a purely football decision, it is not a publicity stunt, We wanted to keep it secret though, contrary to some reports in the press, we did not have a codename for him. That is a good idea though!

"I have been told he is a good player, only it is very difficult for him at Napoli with his name. He has picked up a knock in training but we will still go ahead and give him a trial."
