Stead celebrates in front of the Blackburn End |
WHAT more can be written about Jonathan Stead? Since his arrival at the end of January, his goals have been vital in ensuring Rovers can enjoy the final few weeks of the season.
In just the last three weeks, Stead scored the winner against Fulham, had a hand in Dabizas's own goal against Leicester, and was on target against Everton.
But perhaps his most important goal of the season came this afternoon against Manchester United to ensure Rovers' Premiership survival.
Stead had been troubling the United defence all game before Paul Gallagher's clever through-ball sent him through and he lifted the ball over the advancing Howard and into the back of the net.
After the match, Graeme Souness sent the young Rovers striker 'into the lions den' to meet the press, and he found time to talk to Radio Rovers before heading off to Huddersfield Town for a player of the year evening.
"It has been another fantastic day, some more great points and another goal!" said Stead on Radio Rovers after the game.
"It was hard work, you could say it was an under strength Manchester United side, but they still play the ball around very well, and it was difficult to break them down.
"At the end of the day it was Manchester United in the Premiership and we've won.
"The last thing anyone wanted was for it to go down to the last game, we are safe now, we can relax and breathe a huge sigh of relief.
"It was a fantastic ball from Gallagher, he made a huge impact when he came on. I was thinking of cutting it back, but then I saw the goalkeeper edging down so I just lifted it over him," added the stringing star.
