Ferguson is doing double sessions in a bid to get fitBARRY Ferguson can't wait to get back into action, but understandably is not prepared to take any chances.
The influential midfielder has made tremendous progress since dislocating his kneecap in the match against Newcastle United on December 28. He is excited about 'getting nearer' but knows there is still much to be done.
"I'm doing lots of running and ball work now, but I have to build my thigh back up before I can even consider playing," he said.
"I'm in early every morning, working double sessions on muscle-building but there's still that one big step, to play a competitive game, and I'm not quite there.
"I won't set any targets because I will be disappointed if I don't reach them. The idea is to take each day as it comes and hopefully my leg's going to get stronger. As soon as I feel right, I'll come back."
Barry has been a regular in the treatment room, along with David Thompson and Jay McEveley, who are also recovering from serious knee injuries. The trio have helped each other along in adversity.
Jay admitted: "We have all become great pals and although it's bad news, it's been easier having the others alongside.
"I'm running again, but I still have to build the muscles up. I'm hoping to get a '90 minutes' in before the end of the season, but we'll have to see."
