SOUEY: REF DECISION COST US

Posted on: Wed 17 Nov 2004

We were in the game until the decision - Souness

GRAEME Souness pointed to the decision to award a free-kick against Craig Short, twelve minutes into the second half as the reason why Rovers ended the game pointless.

On 57 minutes Craig Short and Thierry Henry chased a ball, which saw the Frenchman come crashing to the ground. Referee Alan Wiley chose to award a free-kick, which Henry scored from.

"It wasn't a free kick, and that's what has changed the game," said Souness on Radio Rovers after the game.

"At 0-0 we think we were very much in the game, we were containing Arsenal.

"I think at the time that they scored the first goal we were actually having most of the play.

"They are an extremely dangerous team to play against but I thought we coped with them very well today. But the whole game has hinged on the free kick decision.

"That wasn't a foul. The goal has changed everything.

"Arsenal are the best team around but we were more than a match today."
