OH NO, GRESKO!

Posted on: Wed 17 Nov 2004

Gresko's goal has been given to Stephen Carr

ROVERS' winning goal against Tottenham Hotspur has been declared an own goal - and it's official!

The single goal was initially attributed to Rovers' defender Vratislav Gresko. But the Premiership's Dubious Goals Committee, having examined video evidence, have credited the strike to Spurs' skipper Stephen Carr.

The game, staged at Ewood Park on November 29, had seemed doomed to be goal-less, but no-one had reckoned on Gresko. On 78 minutes, Dwight Yorke passed to the Slovakian 20 yards inside the Tottenham half.

Shooting from far out seemed to be the least favoured option, but unbowed, he fired a rocket from 25 yards out and, with thanks to Carr's body, Kasey Keller was unable to prevent the ball ending up in the far corner of the net.

Rovers initially appealed against the decision, but the Panel have ruled the 'own goal' must stand. Gresko, therefore, must wait a little longer for his first Rovers goal.
