GOAL SHOULD HAVE STOOD - SOUNESS

Posted on: Wed 17 Nov 2004

Souness: Anywhere else, and Yorke's goal would have counted

GRAEME Souness pointed to the disallowed Dwight Yorke goal as the difference between the two sides as Rovers went down 2-1 at Old Trafford this afternoon.

"I've no doubt that if the goal had been scored in a different game at a different venue, the goal would have stood," said Souness after the game.

"Garry Flitcroft was in an offside position, but wasn't interfering with play, I've seen the goal several times on TV and it should have been allowed to stand.

"In the first half we had too many people who believed that we couldn't come here and get a result.

"I made changes at half time and in the second half we went out and showed that we could play."

Paul Gallagher will have enjoyed his first appearance at Old Trafford, the young Rovers striker had a hand in all of Rovers' best play in the second forty-five, and the manager knows that he's going to have a big future in the game.

"Gally has a smart brain, he has the athleticism and will only improve with age.

"I think Gallagher made a big difference to us when he came on today, and he has a real future.

"I've had a history of throwing in youngsters at Old Trafford, Rob Jones at Liverpool and Jay McEveley for Rovers have all been put in at the deep end, and I had no hesitation to do the same with Gally."

Souness was heartened by the performance of the team in the second half, and is in no doubt that if they continue in this vein, they'll soon rise up the table.

"As long as we keep believing, we'll get the points to get the club up the table. Our priority remains to get to forty points and keep in this league, and if we play with confidence like we have today then we'll be alright."
